Craft & community

Freemasonry at a glance

Freemasonry is a community of like-minded people who seek to improve themselves and the world around them. Here is how we practise the craft within Gavel & Staff Lodge.

Square and compasses

A supportive network

Integrity • Respect • Friendship

Freemasonry welcomes men of good character who want to learn, serve and build friendships. It is not a religion or a political organisation; it is a supportive space where we challenge ourselves to act with honesty, moderation and kindness.

From guilds to global fraternity
Established 1717 • London roots

From medieval stonemasons’ guilds to the first Grand Lodge in 1717, the craft has evolved into a worldwide fraternity that still honours its ceremonies and values. Gavel & Staff was consecrated in the Grand Temple in 2007, linking us directly to that tradition.

  • Rituals and etiquette safeguard the craft’s continuity.
  • Education and mentorship help members grow with confidence.
  • Visitors experience both precision and warmth at our meetings.
Symbols & working tools
Square • Compasses • Light

Tools such as the Square and Compasses teach fairness, moderation and compassion. Aprons, tracing boards and passwords reinforce lessons about humility and integrity, while ceremonies invite reflection on how to apply them in daily life.

We explain these meanings in approachable language so guests and newer brethren feel included.

Brotherhood & charity
Service in action

Meetings provide a place to socialise, reflect and support one another. We raise funds and volunteer for causes including the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution and local community projects.

  • Hospitality for visitors and travelling brethren.
  • Raffles, collections and sponsored events to benefit charities.
  • Opportunities to learn ceremonial roles with patient guidance.

How to join

We are happy to talk to prospective members. The process starts with a conversation so we can answer your questions and ensure the craft is right for you.

  • Speak with a Mason you know or contact the lodge directly.
  • Meet informally with brethren who will explain the journey.
  • Submit an application for the lodge to consider.

What we look for

Integrity, a willingness to help others and a belief in a Supreme Being are essential. We also seek people who can commit the time needed to enjoy the lodge fully.

If you already have links to Toastmasters or the Livery, you will find many kindred spirits here.

We start with a relaxed chat to understand your interests and to explain what membership involves, including time commitments and expectations.

We invite you to socials or to meet members so you can see how we work together and whether our culture suits you.

If you choose to proceed, we guide you through the application, introductions and dates so you are fully supported from the outset.
